Signs You Have a Problem
- Fast, wriggling silver insects. Roughly 10mm long, carrot-shaped, with a distinctive side-to-side movement. Usually seen when a light goes on in a bathroom or kitchen at night.
- Yellow staining and scales. Silverfish shed scales that leave a fine dust and yellowish marks on paper, wallpaper and fabric.
- Damage to paper and wallpaper. Irregular grazed patches on book bindings, wallpaper paste, photographs and stored documents.
- Small dark droppings. Pepper-like specks in cupboards, airing cupboards and under sinks.

Common Questions
Are silverfish harmful?
They do not bite and carry no disease, but they damage paper, books, wallpaper and natural fabrics, and their shed scales can aggravate allergies. They are also a reliable indicator of a damp problem worth addressing.
Why do I only see them at night?
Silverfish are nocturnal and strongly avoid light. Seeing several during the day suggests a large population.
Will they come back after treatment?
Only if the damp does. Treatment clears the existing population; controlling humidity is what stops a new one establishing.
