Signs You Have a Problem
- Bites concentrated at dawn and dusk. Most UK species feed around dawn and dusk, so biting that clusters at those times points to mosquitoes rather than fleas or bed bugs.
- High-pitched whine at night. The audible wingbeat near the ear while trying to sleep is distinctive.
- Larvae in standing water. Small comma-shaped larvae wriggling just under the surface of a water butt, gully or pond, diving when disturbed.
- Problem worsens after wet weather. A noticeable increase a week or two after heavy rain indicates fresh standing water is being colonised.

Do UK mosquitoes carry disease?
Native UK species are not currently a significant disease risk, unlike in tropical regions. The problem here is the biting itself, disturbed sleep, and secondary infection from scratching.
How far do mosquitoes travel from where they breed?
Most UK species stay within a few hundred metres of their breeding site, which is why finding the water is usually straightforward and why treating it works so well.
Will treating my garden help if next door has a pond?
