Identification
Bird, rodent, storage, harvest and dust mites all need different handling. Identifying the species tells us where the source is, which is the part that actually matters.
Source removal
Bird and rodent mites leave a nest once the host does and move into the property looking for a new one. The nest has to be removed and the void treated, or the biting continues.
Residual treatment
Insecticide applied to voids, loft spaces, around pipework and along the routes mites use to move into living areas.
Proofing and humidity advice
Sealing the cavity or eaves the nest occupied, and advice on humidity control where storage or dust mites are involved.
Signs You Have a Problem
- Bites with no visible insect. Bird mites are roughly 0.5mm and very hard to see. Unexplained itching and small red bite marks, often worse at night, are the usual first sign.
- Recent bird activity in the roof. Biting that starts shortly after a nest in the loft, eaves or chimney goes quiet is the classic bird mite pattern, as the mites leave the abandoned nest.
- Fine dust in stored food. Storage mites produce a characteristic mealy dust in flour, grain, dried fruit and pet food, sometimes with a faint minty smell.
- Symptoms concentrated in one room. Biting that is much worse in a single bedroom, particularly an upstairs one under a roof void, usually points to a nest directly above.

Common Questions
Why am I being bitten but cannot find anything?
Bird and rodent mites are around half a millimetre and translucent, so they are very easy to miss. If biting started after bird or rodent activity in the roof stopped, mites are the most likely explanation.
Can I just block up the nest?
Blocking the entry without removing the nest usually makes it worse, because the mites are driven inward into the living space looking for a host. The nest needs removing and the void treating first.
Are dust mites the same thing?
No. Dust mites do not bite; they trigger allergy and asthma through their droppings. They are managed with humidity control, hot washing and mattress covers rather than insecticide.
