- Shed larval skins. Empty bristly casings accumulating along skirtings and in drawers, often more numerous than the larvae themselves.
- Damage in undisturbed areas. Bare patches and thinning in carpet under furniture, behind doors and along edges, rather than in the middle of a room.
- Small mottled beetles on windowsills. Adults are 2 to 4mm and patterned black, white and brown. They feed on pollen outdoors and head for windows, which is why they are noticed there.

Carpet beetle damage tends to be concentrated bare patches with bristly larval skins nearby; moth damage comes with silken webbing and cases. We confirm the species before treating, because the treatments differ.
Why do they keep coming back?
Nearly always an untreated source, most often a bird nest in the loft or eaves providing feathers for larvae to feed on indefinitely. Until that is removed the infestation regenerates.
Will they damage synthetic carpets?
Larvae need keratin, so pure synthetics are largely safe. Wool blends are vulnerable, and larvae will still feed on hair, skin debris and food residue trapped in synthetic pile.
